ABOUT THE PROBLEM

A tragic sign of our times, forced displacement impacts an ever-increasing number of individuals, families, and communities, as well as a rising proportion of the world population.

With the highest levels of displacement on record, an unparalleled 34,000 people are forced from their homes all around the world, every day! Recent global trends reports show that among them are nearly 21.3 million refugees that are fleeing their homes or countries of origin due to war or political/religious persecution in search of refuge and resettlement. Half of that number are children under 18 years of age!

TENSIONS

Escalated tensions have erupted in Syria, Mozambique, and the Mediterranean and have created a humanitarian crisis where millions have had to flee to other countries with and without the welcoming arms of participating host countries.

The total number of refugees has consecutively increased over 55 percent in the last 5 years and has no immediate solution in sight. This increase was driven mainly by the conflict in Syria, which accounted for more than half of new refugees in 2015.

SHARING THE RESPONSIBILITY OF A HUMANITARIAN CRISIS

Important factors a country must consider when measuring the impact they will have on hosting refugees are dependent upon the size of the country’s economy, development level, and population. The developing low-to-middle income countries least able to meet the development needs of their own citizens have hosted on an average of 86% of all refugees under UNHCR’s mandate and continue to receive refugees disproportionately. By the end of 2015, countries in developing regions hosted 13.9 million of the world’s total refugee population, compared with the 2.2 million hosted by countries in developed regions.
